Do The Numbers Match the Aisle? What Tampa Bay’s Wedding Market Looks Like

Those of us who live in Tampa Bay already know this place is a dream backdrop for weddings. Beaches, sunsets, historic venues, and a vibrant cultural mix? It’s basically a ready-made wedding brochure. From oceanfront views to architectural venues, the wide selection and year-round tropical weather allow the Tampa Bay Area to be a top contender. But what’s fun is seeing the numbers from The Wedding Report line up with what we planners, vendors, and couples experience every day.

Last year, weddings brought in a jaw-dropping $684 million in sales right here in the Tampa Bay area, and that’s just the direct spending on things like venues, planners, florists, and caterers. But the real story goes even deeper. Every dollar spent on a wedding keeps moving through our community as florists buy from wholesalers, employees get paid, and those same employees go out to dinner, shop, and support other local businesses. Economists call this the “multiplier effect,” and in our industry, it basically means that $684 million turns into well over a billion dollars of total economic impact for Tampa Bay. In other words, weddings don’t just celebrate love; they fuel our local economy in a big way!

Where is the bulk of that $684 million going, you ask? Half of the budget for couples is going into only five items, but they are the big-ticket items, since four of them determine the flow of the day, and one sets everything in motion. Let’s break them down.

The bottom two of the highest expenditures in weddings go to the bar and the photographer. Each is 7% of the cost of weddings. The cost of the bar will fluctuate based on the alcohol you want to serve, the number of guests, and whether it’s part of the catering package or not. With photography, it all depends on the experience level, equipment, team, and what is being delivered at the end of the service.

The next highest expenditure is what sets all the wedding planning in motion: engagement rings. Without the ring, there is no wedding planning, no vendors, no venue, no dress shopping, and definitely no bachelorette and bachelor events! With the price of gold on the rise, according to Business Insider, the cost of rings will rise, and your pocket will feel it. The top two revenue drivers in the wedding (and event) industry are food and venue (no surprise there!). Food generated $107 million last year, with venues coming in at $112 million. You are looking at around $40-$50/guest, including main course and appetizers. This makes complete sense, knowing that the Tampa Bay area is a recognized and growing foodie area. Wallet Hub ranked Tampa #7 in foodie cities. (https://thatssotampa.com/tampa-florida-top-foodie-city/).  As for venues, the main wedding and event sites differ in the quantity of venues, but they average at 120+ venues. Not surprising, considering the size of Tampa Bay.

The fact is, we have an amazing, ever-growing, wedding destination right here in the heart of Tampa Bay. One that is constantly feeding our local economy, creating opportunities in the form of jobs, visitors coming to our shores, and all while adding to the local economy.
